A Study on the Relationship between Self-Esteem and Anxiety of the Aged


Abstract
This study was to examine the relationship between self-esteem and anxiety.
The subject for this study was the 110 persons older than 65 years who have lived home in Gwang-Ju city.
These data were collected from May 6th to June 30th 1996.
The measurement instrument used were Rosenberg¢¥s Self-Esteem Scale and Spielberger¢¥s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) Scale.
The collected data were analyzed by T-test, 1-Way A.N.O.V.A, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient using S.P.S.S.
The results of the study were summarized as follows ;
1. The first hypothesis, "the higher the level of Self-Esteem, the lower the level of Trait Anxiety" was supported(r=0.6143, p=0.000).
2. The second hypothesis, "the higher the level of Self-Esteem, the lower the level of State Anxiety" was supported(r=0.5520, p=0.000).
3. The third hypothesis, "the higher the level of Trait Anxiety, the higher the level of State Anxiety" was supported(r=0.7148, p=0.000).
4. General characteristic variable significantly related to the degree of Self-Esteem was age(F=4.52, p=0.0050), religion(p=2.78, p=0.0306), degree of education (F = 4.39, p=0. 0025), past occupation (F = 4.25, p=0.0031), health status(F=6.49, p=0.0001), house Patten(F =6.95, p=0.0015), amount of pocket money(F=4.03, p=0.0206), the responsibility of the living expenses(F=4.08, p=0.0197).
5. General characteristic variable significantly related to the degree of Trait Anxiety was religion(F=3.24, p=0.0149), degree of education(F=5.40, p=0.0005), past occupation(F =3.38, p=0.0121), hobby(F=4.07, p=0.0041), health status(F=4.31, p=0.0029), house Patten (F=5.69, p=0.0045).
6. General characteristic variable significantly related to the degree of State Anxiety was religion(F=4.50, p=0.0021), degree of education(F=2.51, p=0.0462), past occupation(F =2.59, p=0.0407), health status(F=3.75, p=0.0069), house Patten(F=10.26, p=0.0001), amount of pocket money(F=6.79, p=0.0017), the responsibility of the living expenses (F = 4.13, p=0.0186).
